Design as professional practice has flourished in the Arab region over the past two decades. It provided the means to present a new perspective on Arab societies, help visualize a contemporary and unconventional Arab identity, and give voice to new creative trends that engage with local cultural heritage. The talk will address the importance of design research and publishing as an act of political engagement, its contribution to cultural development and empowerment, and will highlight the importance of documenting and presenting an alternative design history from parts of the world that are rarely covered in main-stream design publications and broadcast.

ازدهر مجال التصميم في المنطقة العربية كممارسة مهنية في العقدين الماضيين، وقدم وسائل تسمح بطرح نظرة جديدة للمجتمعات العربية، كما ساعد على تصوير هوية عربية معاصرة وغير تقليدية، وأعطى كذلك فرصة لموجات إبداعية جديدة تنخرط مع الإرث الحضاري المحلي. ستتناول هذه المحاضرة أهمية بحوث التصميم والنشر كأنواع من الانخراط السياسي ومساهماتها في التطوير والتمكين الثقافي. إضافة إلى ذلك، ستسلّط الضوء على أهمية توثيق وعرض تاريخ تصميم بديل من عدة مناطق في العالم، مناطق نادرًا ما يتم تغطيتها في المنشورات والإذاعات السائدة والمتخصصة في التصميم.

Dr. Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFarès is the Founding Director of the Khatt Foundation and Khatt Books publishers. She holds degrees in design and design history from Leiden University (PhD, 2017), Yale University (MFA, 1990), and Rhode Island School of Design (BFA, 1987). She is member of AGI (Alliance Typographique Internationale) since 2015. She is an independent design curator, writer, designer, and publisher. She has curated several design exhibitions and has published seminal books on typography and design from the Arab World. She regularly contributes to professional and academic publications and journals. She leads workshops internationally and supervises research at universities in The Netherlands.

الدكتورة هدى سميتسهوزين-أبي فارس هي المديرة المؤسِّسة لـ «مؤسسة خط» ودار نشر«خط بوكس». تحمل شهادات في التصميم وتاريخه من جامعة ليدن (دكتوراه، 2017)، جامعة ييل (ماجستير في الفنون الجميلة، 1990) ومدرسة رودآيلاند للتصميم (بكالوريوس في الفنون الجميلة، 1987). أبي فارس عضو في التحالف الجرافيكي الدولي منذ العام 2005، كما تعمل كقيّمة مستقلة في مجال التصميم بالإضافة إلى كونها كاتبة، ومصممة وناشرة. أشرفت أبي فارس على عدة معارض متعلقة بالتصميم ونشرت كتبًا مهمة حول التيبوغرافيا والتصميم في العالم العربي، وتساهم بانتظام في المنشورات والمجلات المهنية والأكاديمية، كما أنها تقود ورش عمل عالمية وتشرف على أبحاث في جامعات في هولندا.
